- Born: in Wedel
He always reverts to portraits of lighthouses, fish, trawlers, fishermens' cottages and other typical scenes of northern Germany's coastal region. Wherever sea and land meet, the landscape becomes an artistic challenge to Ole West. Thinking about who inspired his paintings, names like Edward Hopper or Horst Janssen come to mind. One of them is responsible for ideas and their technical conversion, while the other inspired the contents. From these influences West has developed over the years his own artistic language in which he combines an imaginary space of maps and navigational charts in a collagelike style.
Today the works of Ole West are so well-known even in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia, that the term of a Northern German "Coastal-Art" is immediately connected with his name.
